Today on the FareCompare 4×4, The Coaster Critic helps us (and you) plan the theme park vacation of your dreams. Find out where to take the whole family, which parks still offer great deals (free entry is a pretty great deal), and discover the roller coaster you must ride at least once in your life.
Check out Summer Travel Tips: Theme Park Edition for all the thrilling details.

We’ve kicked off a new feature – the FareCompare 4×4. Each month we’re going to sit down with (or at least email back and forth with) travel writers, airline industry insiders, and some of our own resident experts to get very different perspectives on the same travel topic.
After our guests have answered the four questions we just have to have answered, we hope to get some of our readers to weigh in, as well.
Our first topic is “summer travel” and our first guest is Emily Starbuck Gerson, who writes Maiden Voyage (yeah, we thought that was a pretty appropriate publication to highlight on our first time out). Emily provided tips and insight for 20-somethings planning a summer vacation. However, even if your 20s seem like a distant memory, you’ll still find that her advice (and some of her favorite destinations) will work for you, too.
Check out Summer Travel Tips for 20-Somethings and stay tuned in the upcoming days for the latest from the FareCompare 4×4. We’ve got roller coasters, flight attendants, and so much more.

Today’s guest post comes from Alexia Nestora, a blogger, volunteer and adventure travel industry consultant. Read Alexia’s latest at Voluntourism Gal and follow her on Twitter @VoluntourismGal.
Voluntourism seems to be the new buzz word but it’s actually has been around for as long as people have been traveling, voluntourism is nothing new but recently it’s gotten a lot of media attention and as a result is rising to the surface a lot more. The Peace Corps was one of the first organizations to formalize volunteering abroad and of course missionaries have been going abroad to serve for years. Voluntourism basically means giving back while on vacation, whether that’s through a 2 month teaching stint in Africa or building homes for 2 days in Mexico.
Traveling as a voluntourist you will see a side of a community that is hidden away from traditional tourists. While most people will only take pictures of a sight, a voluntourist will live with the community that surrounds the sight and will truly understand what local culture is like – it’s so much more than a bus tour could ever show you. If you’re planning a Memorial Weekend trip…or any weekend, for that matter…Chicago is a great family-friendly, fun destination, and there’s so much to do! For a first-time visit to the city, you and your family might want to concentrate on activities in the downtown area, where its central location is conducive to getting the most “bang for your buck” in a limited amount of time.

Memorial Day has finally arrived, marking the official start to a summer of sun, fun and barbeques galore. Are you ready? This long weekend is an ideal time to visit the nation’s capital, as the weather is often pitch-perfect (sunny and 80-something degrees). Many locals have departed for area beaches, leaving a less crowded city to tour about on foot or via public transport. Whether you’re on a budget or simply looking for the area’s best, we’ve got a suggestion for you.

Memorial Day weekend in Austin means one thing: the lake. Austin’s hot summers call for long days spent in and on the water, and Memorial Day is the official unofficial kickoff to boating season. Most of the revelers will take to Lake Travis, where Devil’s Cove is wall-to-wall boats and nary a shirt is in sight, because the city’s in-town lake, Lake Austin, usually bans personal watercraft.
Spend Memorial Day in Austin

Memorial Day will be here before you know it. It’s time to start planning a getaway for the long-weekend (or just get out of work for a week and make a full-on vacation out of it).
We’re excited to welcome guest bloggers next week who will provide an inside look at some of our favorite Memorial Day destinations: Austin, Chicago, and DC.
We’ll kick off the early Memorial Day festivities on Monday and continue through most of next week. Make sure to check back and see what these great cities have to offer.
