Virgin America launched new service to Boston from Los Angeles and San Francisco, and moved in on American Airlines territory in the process. Throw in American’s continuing battle with JetBlue and United Airlines over transcontinental flights from Logan, and it’s no surprise that the carrier is reacting.
While a good old-fashioned airfare war could be expected, we’re also seeing an appeal to frequent fliers. American Airlines is offering triple mileage incentives on flights from Boston to LA, San Francisco, and San Diego. Book your flight by May 31, 2009 and use the promo code BOS3X to earn extra miles. Visit American Airlines for more details, and read more about American’s latest move on Boston.com.

We all know Northwest and Delta will be completing their physical merger soon, and now their frequent flier programs are coming together.
Later this year there will be no more WorldPerks, just Delta SkyMiles - meantime, starting this month, you can transfer miles back and forth between programs.
And now Delta is offering a Gold SkyMiles Credit Card (from American Express). Sign up now, and earn 20,000 miles after your first purchase. And there’s more:
- Get another 5,000 miles for adding 2 card members to your account
- No annual fee for the first year (that saves $95 alone)
And, with the card, you’re automatically enrolled in the SkyMiles. If this sounds like something that would work for you, see all the details here.

Yes, another credit-card offer - with a twist.
Virgin America offering its frequent flier eleVAte members a new “signature” Visa card, and in return, you get a free flight - though it should be noted that the “free flight” is a one-way flight, not round-trip.
Any other catch? Doesn’t look like it. You must apply for the card by Nov. 30, and use the card - just once - by Jan. 31, 2009. And your travel must be completed by May 20, 2009.
Aha - what about black-out dates? There are none.
Annual card fees? There are none.
But check out the details for yourself, on Virgin America’s website.

Call it good old fashioned “damage control” from American Airlines. After what can only be described as a nightmare of a week for AA with mass flight cancellations, they are reaching out to their Elite Rewards members to smooth things over.
Of course, they’re not really saying that they’re smoothing things over, but it definitely seems to be the case. Keep reading to see a sample of the deals American Airlines is offering its AAdvantage Gold Members…
