Thanks to traveldudes (@traveldudes) for the great tips and destination ideas.

Back in the ’70’s, Manali, Himachal Pradesh -became a popular Himilayan tourist destination in Northern India. It’s changed some since then, but much of the old flair and atmosphere remain, especially in Old Manali or Vashisht. And more and more adventurous travelers are discovering the Kullu valley.

The valley is famous for its apple plantations, forests and snowy mountains. Many travelers also start their Himalaya treks here. You should at least do a one day trek on one of the mountains to get the feeling of this awesome landscape. So why don’t you start with a “gentle” 5000 foot peak?

You could also enjoy the daily life of the mall in the center of town. There are colorful markets, restaurants, cafes, and lots of people, including Tibetans, Buddhists monks, Sherpas from Nepal, and of course, western tourists.

In Old Manali and also in Vashisht, look for the traditional houses of the region. Old Manali is about 2 km north of the mall — you simply follow the road till you reach the iron bridge. You can easily walk there or take a rickshaw. After you cross the bridge, you’ll begin to notice a few cafes and shops.

Vashisht is on the other side of the Beas River, where you’ll also find the main road of the Kullu Valley - and the hot springs which is popular with backpackers who frequent the local hostels and cafes. You’ll also see beautiful old stone temples. Take a short walk, up into the hills to see another temple and an inviting waterfall.
