Have you ever thought of enjoying a longer trip… maybe in Australia… for at least 2 months? Then you might want to buy a car for that time! It will be cheaper than renting one as you can sell it after your trip again. And, you also won’t have any rental rules to look after.
With your own car, you will be able to hit the dirt roads in Australia, which is a big plus to explore many of the sights.

There are a few things you should think of before buying a car. As this is an important topic for a successful trip, we’ve got a detailed tip for you - including, a car as your accommodation - so keep reading.
First of all you should know how much you can invest. You will see that you can get really cheap cars, but these are sometimes also a bit more risky. It’s not always like that, but the cheaper they are, the more you’ve got to invest later. But even with more expensive cars, you should always expect some repairs at any time. Because of that you should choose a popular brand like Toyota, Nissan or Holden. Repairs will be quicker as spare parts are easier to get (perhaps even cheaper) and more common in Australia.
Would you like to have your own bed in the car? It’s quite easy to find a car with a mattress in the back of it. Normally these would be in station wagons or vans. But you can get also a four wheel drive with a mattress.
If you’ve saved enough money for your trip, we recommend you to buy a 4×4. It’s a fantastic and safe way to explore Australia. Nearly everyone who enjoyed Australia with a 4×4 will tell you that there is no better way to do it. You should have at least $5000 to buy a 4×4, but every $1000 more is a good investment.
Most travelers don’t have money to buy an “expensive” 4×4. Don’t worry; you will also experience Australia! But be aware of, that many roads and national parks (also Frazer Island) are only open to 4×4’s. This would mean that you have to book extra tours or rent a 4×4 to do these things. At the end it could be that a 4×4 isn’t that much more expensive.
Again, if you are travelling for 2 months or more, it’s worth buying a car. Remember, if everything goes well, you’ll get some of your money back when you sell your car. Sure, you would like to sell your car for a higher price than you bought it, because you had repairs on it or other costs. But if everyone did that, most of the cars you’d be looking at wouldn’t be affordable any longer. On the other hand, if you bought your car for a low price and the demand for cars is high when selling, you can try to get more for it. It also depends on the season. Good luck!
My personal advice: Buy a 4×4 for around AU$ 6,500 ($5,676) - and try to sell it for around AU$6,000 ($5,240). Perhaps you had some expenses like a new tire, oil change (which you can easily do yourself to keep the expenses low) etc. That might add an extra AU$ 200 - 800. Now try to rent a 4×4 for 2 or more months for around AU$ 700 to 1,300 ($611 — $1,135)!
At the moment you’ve rented a car, that money is gone completely, of course.
The Kings Cross Car Market, situated at 110 Bourke Street in Woolloomooloo in Sydney, is the best place to buy and sell cars from and to other travelers:
