United Airlines has launched an Australia airfare sale, dropping prices to Sydney and Melbourne from over 150 U.S. departure cities. Sale airfares are good for outbound travel by September 21, 2009. The Australian dollar is also extremely weak compared to the US $ now.
So this spectacularly low fare during the summer is the first real opportunity most Americans will have to travel to this wonderful destination. I myself have already booked to visit Cairns, the home of the Great Barrier Reef and from what I hear a beautiful city.
The Australian government has limited competition on the US-Australia airline route, which has made fares to Australia among the highest in the world. Now that competition has been allowed, the fares have fallen to normal levels.
LET’S ALL GO TO AUSTRALIA!
I’ve noticed that most of these fare packages include two or more airlines. My past practice (Mostly Perth to Tampa or New York) included the selection of a an airline and its code-share partners. I felt the odds of misplaced luggage were lower and if, perchance, there was a misplaced connection, the chances of a user-friendly solution were increased significantly.
Haven’t lost any luggage (knock on wood). Missed a few connections, but was handled well by Qantas and American personnel, including hotels, meals, and direct flights. Also treated well by Malaysa Air and Emirates.
Also, about luggage. I haven’t had to pay any fees, using one code-share group. These fees apply when using multiple (non-alligned) carriers though. Am I mistaken about this?
The Australian dollar, recently, has dropped as low as 61 cents American. Currrently the exchange is about 72 cents American, but the economists here think it will gravitate back to around 65 cents. That can be significant when you’re looking at spending a few thousand dollars on a trip.
