With new Open Skies agreements in place, we will start to see more routes and flights open up between the US and Europe on a range of airlines at the end of March. While all of these new flights will be touted by the airlines, none get them more excited than new flights to London Heathrow. London Heathrow continues to be the hub for international business travelers, and US-based carriers want as strong a presence their as possible. American Airlines and Continental Airlines have both announced major changes involving Heathrow. Keep reading to see how they might affect you… |
Today, American Airlines has announced that they will move three of their daily flights to London Gatwick to Heathrow (2 from DFW, 1 from Raleigh-Durham). American had previously stated it would only shift two daily flights from Gatwick. This move will bring an end to American Airlines service at Gatwick after 26 years (the airline has offered all Gatwick employees positions at Heathrow).
Continental Airlines will also be offering daily service between Heathrow and Houston Intercontinental or Newark Liberty Airport.
With added flights from American, Continental, and others, as well as expanded codesharing options, the competition at Heathrow should heat up quickly. Hopefully, this will lead to a period of reduced airfare and cheap flights for international travelers.
