AirTran vs. Midwest = Great Deals from Milwaukee

The Cranky Flier has a fantastic post on the new battle that’s raging between AirTran and Midwest Airlines (”The Cookie”) just as Midwest’s acquisition by Northwest/TPG gets approved. Air Tran Airlines, passed over on the Midwest deal, is taking things into their own hands.

So, what does this mean for travelers? Well, a little added competition never hurt anybody. Or at least, a little added competition usually leads to lower airfares.

As AirTran Airlines adds new direct flights out of Milwaukee to destinations on both coasts, we’re waiting to see how Midwest will respond. In the meantime, it seems they’re going after some of Skybus’ routes. Just today, we spotted a Midwest airfare from Milwaukee to Columbus at $110. Now, you can still book this flight on Skybus for between $25 - $75, but we could see things start to heat up on all fronts.

Bottom line: We don’t know how long AirTran can stay in this fight. Especially if Northwest Airlines flexes a little muscle. But, in the meantime, look for deals out of Milwaukee, capitalize as much as you can while these airlines go after each others’ routes, and read Cranky’s “AirTran Attacks the Cookie, Will Northwest Come to the Rescue?” for all the gory details.
